locksmith 17106 Harrisburg

Harrisburg played a notable role in American history during the Westward Migration, the American Civil War, and the Industrial Revolution. During part of the 19th century, the building of the Pennsylvania Canal and later the Pennsylvania Railroad allowed Harrisburg to become one of the most industrialized cities in the Northeastern United States. The U.S. Navy ship USS Harrisburg, which served from 1918 to 1919 at the end of World War I, was named in honor of the city.

In 2010 Forbes rated Harrisburg as the second best place in the U.S. to raise a family.[11] Despite the city's recent financial troubles, in 2010 The Daily Beastwebsite ranked 20 metropolitan areas across the country as being recession-proof, and the Harrisburg region landed at No. 7.[12] The financial stability of the region is in part due to the high concentration of state and federal government agencies.

The Pennsylvania Farm Show, the largest free indoor agriculture exposition in the United States, was first held in Harrisburg in 1917 and has been held there every early-to-mid January since then.[13] Harrisburg also hosts an annual outdoor sports show, the largest of its kind in North America, as well as an auto show, which features a large static display of new as well as classic cars and is renowned nationwide. Harrisburg is also known for the Three Mile Island accident, which occurred on March 28, 1979 near Middletown.

The Three Mile Island accident was a core meltdown in Unit 2 (a pressurized water reactor manufactured by Babcock & Wilcox) of the Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Station in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania near Harrisburg, United States which occurred on March 28, 1979.

The power plant was owned and operated by General Public Utilities and Metropolitan Edison (Met Ed). It resulted in the release of approximately 2.5 million curies of radioactive gases, and approximately 15 curies of iodine-131.

The accident began at 4 a.m. on Wednesday, March 28, 1979, with failures in the non-nuclear secondary system, followed by a stuck-open pilot-operated relief valve (PORV) in the primary system, which allowed large amounts of nuclear reactor coolant to escape. The mechanical failures were compounded by the initial failure of plant operators to recognize the situation as a loss-of-coolant accident due to inadequate training and human factors, such as human-computer interaction design oversights relating to ambiguous control room indicators in the power plant's user interface. In particular, a hidden indicator light led to an operator manually overriding the automatic emergency cooling system of the reactor because the operator mistakenly believed that there was too much coolant water present in the reactor and causing the steam pressure release. The scope and complexity of the accident became clear over the course of five days, as employees of Met Ed, Pennsylvania state officials, and members of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) tried to understand the problem, communicate the situation to the press and local community, decide whether the accident required an emergency evacuation, and ultimately end the crisis. The NRC's authorization of the release of 40,000 gallons of radioactive waste water directly in the Susquehanna River led to a loss of credibility with the press and community.

In the end the reactor was brought under control, although full details of the accident were not discovered until much later, following extensive investigations by both a presidential commission and the NRC. The Kemeny Commission Report concluded that "there will either be no case of cancer or the number of cases will be so small that it will never be possible to detect them. The same conclusion applies to the other possible health effects". Several epidemiological studies in the years since the accident have supported the conclusion that radiation released from the accident had no perceptible effect on cancer incidence in residents near the plant, though these findings are contested by one team of researchers. Cleanup started in August 1979 and officially ended in December 1993, with a total cleanup cost of about $1 billion. The incident was rated a five on the seven-point International Nuclear Event Scale: Accident With Wider Consequences.

Communications from officials during the initial phases of the accident were confusing. There was an evacuation of 140,000 pregnant women and pre-school age children from the area. The accident crystallized anti-nuclear safety concerns among activists and the general public, resulted in new regulations for the nuclear industry, and has been cited as a contributor to the decline of new reactor construction that was already underway in the 1970s. Public reaction to the event was probably influenced by The China Syndrome, a movie which had recently been released and which depicts an accident at a nuclear reactor. The film was released on 16 March 1979, 12 days before the accident in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. In the film, a physicist says that the China Syndrome would render "an area the size of Pennsylvania" permanently uninhabitable. While some credit the accident's timing in helping to sell tickets, the studio attempted to avoid appearing as if it were exploiting the accident, which included pulling the film from some theaters.

The Spinnerstown Hotel has been serving the public since the Summer of 1811, when David Spinner, Jr.         obtained a license to operate a tavern at the crossroads of his family’s property.   He ran the tavern until 1819, when he was appointed Justice of the Peace for the community, a position that was previously held by the elder David  Spinner, a   famous potter and craftsman whose creations are today prized as examples of early Pennsylvania  German folk art. Although David Spinner, Jr. remained the owner of the property, which he simply called “The Inn,” until his death in 1866, he rented the tavern to a succession of innkeepers throughout his lifetime, including his son, Edwin Spinner, who, in 1857 was the first to name the   establishment as the “Spinnerstown Hotel.

The Spinner family, from which the village of Spinnerstown derived its name, first settled in the area in the mid 18 th century when Ulrich Spinner obtained a 153 acre tract of the “Great Swamp,” a sprawling 1,000 acre parcel of land owned by a man named Morris Morris.   Mr. Morris received the property in 1720 as a land grant from the estate of William Penn.

From its earliest days as a resting place between Philadelphia and New York in the young America Republic, the Spinnerstown Hotel has retained its charm and position as a community mainstay.   Our   family purchased the    landmark establishment on June 10, 1959 and we are proud to say that we have owned and operated the “Hotel” longer than any of the proprietors that came before us.   We hope to continue to welcome you into our friendly  atmosphere for many years to come by offering traditional and innovative cuisine, spirits and warm hospitality.

Allentown is a city located in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania.  It is Pennsylvania's third most populous city, after Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, and the 215th largest city in the United States. The city had a total population of 118,032 and is currently the fastest growing city in Pennsylvania. It is also the county seat of Lehigh County.

Located on the Lehigh River, Allentown is the largest of three adjacent cities that make up a region of eastern Pennsylvania and western New Jersey known as the Lehigh Valley, Allentown is 60 miles (97 km) north of Philadelphia, the fifth most populous city in the United States, 80 miles (130 km) east of Harrisburg, the state capital, and 90 miles (140 km) west of New York City, the nation's largest city.

Two four-year colleges, Cedar Crest College and Muhlenberg College, are located in Allentown. Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom, a very popular amusement park, is located just outside of the city.

Commercial airline service to and from the city is available through Lehigh Valley International Airport. General aviation and charter service is offered by LVIA and Allentown Queen City Municipal Airport (ICAO: KXLL, FAA LID: XLL).

The city is connected to the Interstate Highway System by Interstate 78 and Interstate 476, the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, which provide access connections to the major urban areas of other Northeastern United States urban areas. Also U.S. Route 22, the Lehigh Valley Thruway, provides a limited access east-west highway connection to the Interstate Highway System to the northern parts of the city. Commuter train service between Allentown and Philadelphia ended in 1979 when state funding to operate the service ceased.

Allentown is a two-time winner of the All-America City Award, being recognized in 1962 and 1974–1975.

Center City, which includes the downtown area and the 7th Street retail and residential corridor, is the city's central business district and the host to various city, county and federal government centers. To the east of Center City are "The Wards," the areas that developed as residential areas during the city's industrial boom of the late 19th century and early 20th century. Just east of the Lehigh River are the city's East Side residential neighborhoods, most of which border the various routes to nearby Bethlehem. South of Center City, and across the Little Lehigh Creek, are the city's South Side neighborhoods, which border Emmaus. Lastly, there is West End Allentown, which comprises most neighborhoods west of 15th Street.

Allentown's Center City neighborhoods mainly consist of a variety of Victorian and Federal row homes. The stately homes around West Park are mostly Victorian and Craftsman. The houses on the city's tree-lined streets in the West End were mostly built in the 1920s and 40's. Houses in the City's East Side and South Side are a mixture of architectural styles and are generally single and twin family homes built from the 1940s through the 1960s with century old Victorians in the mix. Allentown also has loft apartments in converted mills and historic brick manufacturing buildings and modern and historic high-rise apartment buildings.

The PPL Building is Allentown's tallest building at 322 feet (98 m). It is 23 stories high and is located at the northwest corner of 9th and Hamilton Street. A Lehigh Valley icon, this Art Deco tower can be seen from places throughout the Lehigh Valley; in clear weather, the tower can be seen as far north as the ski resort pass over Blue Mountain. One of the city's older still-standing structures, Allentown Symphony Hall, at 23 North Sixth Street in Center City, was constructed in 1896.

The City of Allentown is characterized by a large stock of historic homes, commercial structures and century-old industrial buildings.

There are three historic districts in Allentown, Old Allentown, the Old Fairgrounds and West Park neighborhoods. Old Allentown and Old Fairgrounds are Center City neighborhoods that hold a joint house tour organized by Old Allentown Preservation Association (OAPA) once a year in September. The West Park neighborhood also offers a tour of this district's larger Victorian and Craftsman-style homes.

Borough History
Silverdale was not always called Silverdale. It’s first name was Paletown derived from the fact that the corner store built and operated by Henry Kaufman was fronted by a pale board fence. (Legend has in that it was sometimes referred to as “Glopboard Settle”, a Pennsylvania Dutch phrase meaning “fence pale village”)   By 1870 the town had grown and the name was change to Portland.  In 1876 the town was renamed Lawndale.  A post Office was established in 1883 with H.C. Gerhart as Postmaster and was located in the corner store.  The name was changed to Silverdale in 1895 and was incorporated as a Borough in 1896.

 Borough Seal
The Borough Seal was designed by Lousia Wismer to commemorate Silverdale’s Centennial Celebration.  The four parts of the seal include the Silverdale Fire Company established in 1914, The Silverdale Brethren In Christ Church built in 1883, the Municipal Building and the American Flag representing the proud patriotism of the people of Silverdale.

Borough Parks
The Silverdale Recreation Association (SRA) was organized in 1965 with the hopes of saving open space in the borough.  The SRA  was able to purchase a three acre wooded lot on Park Avenue  thanks to many donations from local businesses, private citizens and a Federal Grant.  The Borough Park has playground equipment, picnic tables, grills and tennis and basketball courts.  In 1985 when the SRA disbanded, the Borough assumed the land, renovated the building and created the first Borough Office moving out of the Pennview Savings Bank and consolidating all the Borough records.

Silverdale Senior Center
The Pennridge Senior Center was located in Perkasie Borough for many years.  In 2007 they moved their home to a new facility in Silverdale.  The beautiful facility provides more space, modern ammentities and a great location, Silverdale Borough.

Ardmore is a census-designated place (CDP) in Delaware, and Montgomery counties, in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. The population was 12,455 at the 2010 census. The community of Ardmore is a suburb on the west side of Philadelphia, primarily within Lower Merion Township in Montgomery County; a smaller portion of the community is the area of Ardmore Park in adjacent Haverford Township in Delaware County. Originally named Athensville in 1853, the community and its railroad station were renamed Ardmore in 1873 by the Pennsylvania Railroad, on whose ‘Main Line’ west out of Philadelphia Ardmore sits, at Milepost 8.5.

Since 2004, Ardmore's business district has been the subject of a hotly contested eminent domain battle. A grassroots organization, the Save Ardmore Coalition, along with local businesses and other civic groups, opposed an eminent domain/redevelopment program that would likely have involved the demolition of certain historic buildings, and favored preserving those buildings for other commercial use. In March 2006 the Lower Merion Township Board of Commissioners adopted a resolution disavowing the use of eminent domain for the benefit of private redevelopment projects. The Ardmore battle was also instrumental in prompting the Pennsylvania General Assembly to enact legislation in 2006 *restricting the use of eminent domain for private projects.

locksmith  19004 Bala Cynwyd

Bala Cynwyd is a community in Lower Merion Township which is located on the Main Line in southeastern Pennsylvania, bordering the western edge of Philadelphia at US Route 1 (City Avenue). It was originally two separate towns, Bala and Cynwyd, but is commonly treated as a single community. This came about when a single US Post Office served both towns (the "Bala Cynwyd" Branch) using the zip code of 19004. Bala and Cynwyd are still served by separate stations on SEPTA'sCynwyd Line of Regional Rail.

Bala Cynwyd lies in the Welsh Tract of Pennsylvania and was settled in the 1680s by Welsh Quakers, who named it after the town of Bala and the village of Cynwyd in Wales. A mixed residential community made up predominantly of single-family detached homes, it extends west of the Philadelphia city limits represented by City Line Avenue from Old Lancaster Road at 54th Street west to Meeting House Lane and then along Manayunk and Conshohocken State Roads north to Mary Watersford Road, then east along Belmont Avenue back to City Line. This large residential district contains some of Lower Merion's oldest and finest stone mansions, built mainly from 1880 through the 1920s and located in the sycamore-lined district between Montgomery Avenue and Levering Mill Road, as well as split level tract houses built east of Manayunk Road just after World War II.

The oldest commercial district and the original center of Bala Cynwyd straddles the bridge over the old Pennsylvania Railroad tracks, originally belonging to the Columbia Railroad and now part of the SEPTA Cynwyd Line, along Montgomery Avenue at Bala Avenue. This district, long on the National Register of Historic Places, was settled shortly after William Penn's landing in Pennsylvania in 1682 and contains the village's oldest commercial buildings, some dating to the earliest years of the nineteenth century. Bala Avenue itself is an extension of this original town center and comprises a specialized commercial district of its own more than a century old; it has long been known for its children's clothing stores, women's dress and consignment shops, the Bala Theater and a number of small restaurants. The remainder of Bala Cynwyd's original commercial district extends south along Montgomery Avenue as part of the Bala Cynwyd-Merion Commercial District and is coextensive with the commercial center of Merion, with its popular delicatessens and restaurants.

In 1952, WCAU-TV, channel 10 built its headquarters at the corner of City Avenue and Monument Road. Since then, Bala Cynwyd has increasingly become identified with the home of the Philadelphia region's major media outlets. WCAU was owned by CBS from 1958 until September 1995, when it was traded to its current owner, NBC. In addition to channel 10, three successors to WCAU, rival WPVI-TV, owned by ABC is found directly across City Avenue. Bala Cynwyd's AM and FM stations include CBS Radio's WOGL-FM, WIP-AM and WPHT-AM, located on the seventh floor of Two Bala Plaza and Greater Media's WBEN-FM, WNUW, WMGK-FM, WMMR-FM and WPEN, which are housed on the third and fourth floor of One Bala Plaza.

The Bala Cynwyd Shopping Center, completed in 1957, lies a half mile to the south of the village center, bordering Philadelphia on City Avenue. Its major outlets are Lord & Taylor, Acme Markets, Olive Garden, and LA Fitness; Saks Fifth Avenue is located a block to the East.

The village is home to churches of many religions. The oldest of these is Saint John's Episcopal Church on Levering Mill Road, founded in 1863. Saint Matthias Catholic Church is also found one block south of Montgomery on Bryn Mawr Avenue. Bala Cynwyd has also drawn a number of Modern Orthodox and Conservative Jews who live within walking distance of Lower Merion Synagogue and Congregation Adath Israel on Old Lancaster Road where Bala Cynwyd meets Merion. Churches of other denominations are only blocks away in nearby Narberth, Wynnewood, Merion, and Wynnefield/Overbrook.

The Lower Merion Historical Society recently relocated its headquarters from Ashbridge House in Rosemont to the ancient Cynwyd Academy building, adjacent to Bala Cynwyd Middle School on Bryn Mawr Avenue in Cynwyd.

Huntingdon Valley is a village, as well as a suburban mailing address located in Lower Moreland Township, Upper Moreland and Abington Township all in Montgomery County, and in a small section of Upper Southampton Township in Bucks County, Pennsylvania bordering the Fox Chase section of Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.

Originally referred to as "Goosetown,"  Huntingdon Valley boasts some of the highest standards of living in the Greater Philadelphia area with 90% of the Township being single-dwelling homes and having one of the highest per capita incomes in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania

In July 2009, a nationally publicized incident occurred at the Valley Swim Club in Huntingdon Valley. A group of mostly African-American and Hispanic children from a day care center were kicked out of the club, allegedly due to the children's race. On July 15, 2009, the day care center successfully filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the club. In September 2009, the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission found probable cause that racism was involved. The swim club filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on November 15, 2009, and has since gone out of business. United States Chief Bankruptcy Judge Steven Raslavich has jurisdiction over the case and the assets of the club are being administered by United States Trustee Terry P. Dershaw. Financial documents were filed on December 1, 2009. The Valley Swim Club was sold at auction for $1.46 million on Thursday, 13 May 2010

Cheltenham Township is a home rule municipality in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, United States. Although it retains the word "Township" in its official name, it has been governed by a home rule charter since 1977 and is therefore not subject to the Pennsylvania Township Code. The population was 36,793 at the 2010 census, making it the third most populous township in Montgomery County. It is bordered by the City of Philadelphia to the East and South, Abington Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania to the North, Springfield Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania to the West

Cheltenham Township does not have a mayor. Rather it is governed by a Board of Commissioners, who are elected one from each of the township's seven wards. A President of the Board is rotated between these commissioners, and serves as the head of government. Paul Greenwald is the current Board President. A school board, led by Tina Viletto, is in charge of the school district.

The township is in the Second Congressional District (represented by Rep. Chaka Fattah), and Pennsylvania's 154th Representative District (represented by Rep. Lawrence Curry). Prior to the 2000 census, it was in the 13th congressional district with the rest of Montgomery County. It is also in Pennsylvania's 4th Senatorial District

Beginning on January 31, 2005, Cheltenham Township partnered with Abington Township to launch a shared transit service. The Cheltenham Transit Service will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays according to the same route and timetable as the current schedule. A new bus will be used for the service since Laidlaw Transit Service will be the new contractor. All other policies and procedures will remain the same. The bus runs in Abington Township on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

The addition of Saturday to the Cheltenham Transit Service schedule offers riders new flexibility in their weekend travels. Although the change will result in a net reduction in service, Township officials consider this option preferable to eliminating the transit bus altogether.

locksmith 19020 Bensalem

Bensalem Township, an area of 21 square miles, is the buffer township between Philadelphia on the West and the rest of Bucks County on the East and Northeast. Through it pass four of the most important arteries of transportation in the United States --- Interstate 95, U.S. Route No. 13 (Bristol Pike), U.S. Route No. 1 (the Lincoln Highway) and the Eastern Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

There have been many discussions and controversies about the derivation of the name "Bensalem. As far back as 1692 a portion of the name "Salem" appeared in provincial records in connection with surveys and grants of land and some time between that year and 1701 the prefix "Ben" was added. There have also been discussions about the meaning of the name. One historian suggested that the name meant "hill of peace" or "peaceful mount", while others maintained that it meant "son of peace". The last mentioned interpretation seems the most logical, as Joseph Growden, who came to America from the Country of Cornwall in England around 1692 and received a grant of five thousand or more acres of land in Bensalem Township from William Penn, called his vast estate the "Manor of Bensalem", probably in honor of William Penn, a "son of peace".

The Dutch, the Swedes and the English, as a study of the names of the early residents will show settled Bensalem Township. Among the Dutch were such names as Van Bandit, Van der Grift, Van Kirk and Van Artsdalen. These names, in this new country under the English became Vansant, Vandergrift or Vandegrift, Vankirk and Vanartsdalen-and if you look, you will find these names in local phone books. Among the English names that show up in the old records of Bensalem Township are Allen, Baldwin, Williams, Gibbs, Reed and many others. With the heavy influx of new residents during the late 1950's and 1960's there was an infiltration of names whose bearers come from or they are descendants of people who came from almost every state of the Union, in every city, town, township and county of this country of ours.

The Township was not incorporated within its boundaries; it consists of a group of communities, each with its own identity and community life, including churches, schools, fire companies and other community activities, joined together in one large municipal body called a township.

Bristol Pike, which runs parallel with the Delaware River in the southern part of the Township, was also known as "The Kings Highway", was the first road cut through Bucks County by order of the Provincial Council and a number of the milestones are still standing.
After exiting Philadelphia on the Pike, you enter Andalusia and traveling further comes what was previously named "Cornwells Heights", which for a number of years, had its own post office named Maud and its Pennsylvania Railroad named Cornwells. Later, the name of the post office was changed to Cornwells, and still later, about 1912, a development of homes was called Cornwells. That name was used for the entire township until March 19, 1979, when the post office changed to "Bensalem", which it remains today.
In the fall of 2007, after 30 years of renting spaces and not having a place to call home and display all the interesting artifacts and publications on Bensalem's rich heritage, the Bensalem Historical Society moved into their new location on Knights Road on the grounds of Bensalem's Beautiful Central Park

locksmith  19023 Darby

Darby is a borough in Delaware County, Pennsylvania,  along Darby Creek 5 miles southwest of downtown Philadelphia. It has a public library founded in 1743 and a cemetery more than 300 years old. The Quakers lived there early in the colonial era. Darby was settled about 1660 and was incorporated on March 3, 1852. In 1900, 3,429 people made their homes there, in 1910, 6,305, and in 1940, 10,334 residents of Darby existed. The population was 10,299 at the 2000 census. There is speculation, according to local historians, that the name "Darby" is related to "Derby" derived from the English town of Derby, in the county of Derbyshire. One explanation states that the Darby Creek closely resembled the English River Derwent, the main body of water that flows through Derby. British immigrants named the town in the new world thus.

Birthplace of comedian and actor, W.C. Fields, born in 1880 at the Buttonwood Hotel, then located at 9th and Main Streets.

locksmith 19046 Jenkintown

Jenkintown is a borough in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, about 10 miles (16 km) north of downtown Philadelphia. ‘Jenkintown’ is also used to describe a number of neighborhoods surrounding the borough, which also are known by names such as Rydal, Jenkintown Manor and Noble. While the post office will deliver ‘Jenkintown’ addressed mail to these areas, they are not part of the political entity of Jenkintown; they are within Abington Township.

The Jenkintown-Wyncote train station is one of SEPTA's major stops; the Warminster Line, West Trenton Line, Airport Line, and Lansdale/Doylestown Line regional rail services all stop there

The community was named for William Jenkins, settler. The Borough of Jenkintown is located just outside of Philadelphia along the Route 611 corridor between Abington and Cheltenham Townships. The Borough was settled in about 1697 and incorporated on December 8, 1874 when approximately 248 acres (1.00 km2) was taken from Abington Township. Today, the Borough is approximately .58 of a square mile and is home to 4,500 residents.

The Borough is a mostly residential community that is separated into East and West by the Business District that runs along and surrounds Old York Road (Route 611) corridor. On the east side of Old York Road, residential development is predominantly characterized by larger detached single-family homes on lots larger than the Borough average. On the southeast side of York Road, there is a small mixed concentration of row homes, duplexes, and single-family residences. The majority of the residential development, however, is located to the west of York Road. This area consists of a traditional small town mix of detached single-family homes, duplexes, and row homes. Located throughout this area are several multi-family apartment buildings that are residential rental properties. At the center of this residential area are the Jenkintown Elementary School and the Jenkintown High School.

The Jenkintown Fire Department consists of two fire companies founded more than 125 years ago. The Jenkintown Fire Department is a totally volunteer department consisting of the Pioneer Fire Company #1 and the Independent Fire Company #2. The Pioneer Company was organized in 1884 and the Independent Company was organized in 1889. The Fire Department has a total membership of approximately 150 with 50 members comprising the active firefighting crew

locksmith 19047 Langhorne

Langhorne is a borough in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The population was 1,622 at the 2010 census.

The name "Langhorne" is used broadly to describe the majority of surrounding Middletown Township, which for the most part uses Langhorne's zip code of 19047. Sesame Place, while physically located in surrounding Middletown Township, has Langhorne as its mailing address.

Langhorne Borough is about 6 miles west of the Delaware River.

Langhorne Manor is a separate borough that borders Langhorne proper to the south.

Langhorne began in the 17th century as a crossroads called Four Lanes End. The road from Bristol to Durham intersected with the road between Philadelphia and Trenton at the center of the village. These two roads were originally Lenni-Lenape Indian paths that later became known as Maple Avenue and Bellevue Avenue after developing into roads.

In the 1720s, Joseph Richardson settled and eventually opened up a general store and inn at the crossroads. Langhorne continued to grow into a very important transportation center between Trenton and Philadelphia in the later eighteenth century and nineteenth century. Langhorne eventually became the stagecoach transportation hub of Bucks County, transporting people between Trenton and Philadelphia.

The village became known as Attleborough until 1876, when it was incorporated and named for Jeremiah Langhorne, an early resident of the area and former chief justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.

In the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century, Langhorne continued to grow as wealthy Philadelphians constructed large homes and businesses along Maple and Bellevue Avenues

Lansdowne is a borough in Delaware County, Pennsylvania located 5 miles (8.0 km) southwest of downtown Philadelphia. It was named for the Marques of Lansdowne. The borough grew quickly in the early part of the twentieth century when a railroad stop was established near the intersection of Lansdowne Avenue and Baltimore Pike. The borough is primarily residential with a commercial center near the original railroad stop. The borough also contained some light industrial buildings which have been in decline in recent decades.

The borough is sometimes erroneously spelled ‘Landsdowne’ or confused with Lansdale, in nearby Montgomery County.

Lansdowne was once a vacation resort for residents of Philadelphia. People traveled by rail and horse to relax in the town's Victorian homes. Many of the homes have since been turned into multiple dwelling apartments. It is home to numerous arts organizations, including the Lansdowne Symphony Orchestra, Celebration Theater, the Lansdowne Folk Club, and the Lansdowne Arts Festival. The Farmers Market runs, rain or shine, on Saturdays from 9 am to 1 pm. The market which takes place from Memorial Day to Halloween is a great source of Buy Fresh, Buy Local produce and food. The fire department was incorporated December 4, 1894 and provides a career ambulance service alongside a dwindling volunteer fire service. The borough's fire service is supplemented by the Yeadon, Clifton Heights, East Lansdowne, and Garrettford-Drexel Hill Fire Companies.

The town has several historic buildings, including a one-screen movie theater, and four areas that are on the National Register of Historic Places. A community of Scottish weavers lived and worked on Scottdale Road by the Darby Creek in the 19th Century. Some of their houses are still in existence. A Quaker community and a Friends' Meeting House are located on Lansdowne Avenue.

Lower Southampton to the north is part of the Langhorne Post Office. (19047) The CDP is actually a relatively densely populated residential area between the two communities' central business districts.

The Southampton Cyclones, of the American Inline Hockey League, are a professional roller hockey team that have been based at the Feasterville Sportsplex since 2006. The franchise was previously known as the Feasterville Fury, and a team under that name then played in the Professional Inline Hockey Association from 2007 until 2009.

Levittown is a census-designated place (CDP) and planned community in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, United States, within the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The population was 52,983 at the 2010 census. It is 40 feet (12 m) above sea level. Though not a municipality, it is sometimes recognized as the largest suburb of Philadelphia in Pennsylvania (while Upper Darby Township, Lower Merion Township, Bensalem Township, Abington Township and Bristol Township are municipalities larger in size in the three surrounding Pennsylvania counties).

Levittown is a suburban community planned and built by Levitt & Sons. The majority of the land on which it is built was purchased in 1951. Levitt and Sons only built six models of house in Levittown, all single family dwellings with lawns: the Levittowner, the Rancher, the Jubilee, the Pennsylvanian, the Colonial and the Country Clubber, with only modest exterior variations. The homes were moderately priced and required only a low down payment. Construction of Levittown began in February 1952, soon after completion of Levittown, New York, located on Long Island. Levittown, Pennsylvania was the second "Levittown" built by William J. Levitt, who is often credited as the creator of the modern American suburb. To speed up construction, Levitt and Sons perfected a 26-step rationalized building method that was essentially an assembly line type of homebuilding. The house remained stationary, while the construction workers moved from house to house. Each worker had one task such as pouring slabs, framing, installing electric sockets or installing washing machines. This highly regimented process enabled Levitt's workers to produce a finished house every 16 minutes. Construction of the homes commenced in 1952 and when completed in 1958, 17,311 homes were built.

What set Levittown apart from other developments at the time was that it was built as a complete community. Levitt & Sons designed neighborhoods with traffic-calming curvilinear roads, in which there were no four-way intersections. Each neighborhood had within its boundaries a site donated by Levitt & Sons for a public elementary school. Locations for churches and other public facilities were set aside on main thoroughfares such as the Levittown Parkway, likewise donated by the builder to religious groups and other organizations. Other amenities included Olympic-sized public pools, parks, "greenbelts", baseball fields and playgrounds, and a shopping center located in Tullytown borough that was considered large and modern at the time of its construction (and in fact was the largest east of the Mississippi). The first set of 4 sample homes were put on display in a swatch of land near the future Levittown Shop-a-Rama, and an estimated 30,000 people viewed them in that first weekend.

Residents (who are sometimes called Levittowners) were first expected to comply with a lengthy list of rules and regulations regarding the upkeep of their homes and use of their property. Two of these "rules" included a prohibition on hanging laundry out to dry on Sunday and not allowing homeowners to fence off their yards. These proved unenforceable over time, particularly when backyard pools became financially accessible to the working class and privacy concerns drove many to fence off their yards. In the years since Levitt & Sons ended construction, three- and four-story "garden apartments" and a number of non-Levitt owner-occupied houses have been built in Levittown.

Levitt & Sons would not sell homes to African Americans. Though Levitt did not consider himself to be a racist, he was bowing to the prevailing attitudes of many European Americans during the 1950s, considering housing and racial relations entirely separate matters. However, this did not prevent a European-American family from reselling a home to an African-American family, and Levittown's first black couple, William and Daisy Myers, bought a home in the Dogwood Hollow section in 1957. Their move to Levittown was marked with racist harassment and mob violence, which required intervention by state authorities. This led to an injunction and criminal charges against the harassers while Myers and their supporters refused to surrender and received national acclaim for their efforts. For instance, Daisy Myers has been hailed as "The Rosa Parks of the North", who helped expose the northern states' problems with racial inequality of that time. The community's otherwise placid exterior was again disturbed during the so-called suburban gas riots of June 1979 in the wake of the Camp David Peace Accords, which resulted in a second embargo by Arab oil-producing nations. The unrest occurred June 24–25, 1979, as lines swelled and tempers flared in the heart of Levittown at an intersection known as Five Points, a location surrounded by six service stations, two of which were severely damaged by vandalism in the riots. The two days of riots made national headlines and were mentioned (although not directly by name) in the draft of an address to the nation that was to have been delivered by President Jimmy Carter on July 5, 1979.

A baseball team from Levittown won the Little League World Series in 1960. Levittown American beat an opponent from Fort Worth, Texas, to win the honor.

The Levittown Shopping Center (known officially as but rarely called the "Levittown Shop-a-Rama"), located in Tullytown, was unusually designed. Two parallel strips of stores faced the parking lot with a courtyard that had green spaces, benches, and entrances to the stores. The center had one large anchor department store (Pomeroys, which was acquired by The Bon-Ton) as well as staple stores of a growing suburban demand (JC Penney, Woolworth's, Sears-just hardware). The shopping center began a slow decline in the mid-1970s from which it never recovered with the building of the Oxford Valley Mall. The mall, located just north of Levittown, in Langhorne in Middletown Township, drew shoppers away from the older Levittown facility, given Oxford Valley's much larger size and enclosed shopping environment. In 2002, the redeveloped site of the Shop-a-rama was reopened as the Levittown Town Center. The completed facility contains 468,675 square feet (43,541.3 m2) of retail space.

Of the five public pools built by Levitt & Sons and operated by the Levittown Public Recreation Association (LPRA), four were closed in 2002 with the exception of one located in the Pinewood section. LPRA Headquarters (and other landmarks) of this prototypical post-war suburb of sometimes mythic importance have been the focus of historic preservation efforts. Since 2002, studies have been underway to establish the Levittown Historic District

Havertown is also known for its large Irish-American population. Many Irish-Americans still live there today. According to the 2000 US Census, Haverford Twp. ranks in the top 60 of census-recognized municipalities nationwide in percentage of population with Irish ancestry. The neighborhood takes pride in its distinct Irish heritage and is home to many Irish bars and shops. For these reasons the neighborhood remains a very popular destination for Irish immigrants. Of the 51,560 residents, 11,182 noted "Irish" as their first reported ancestry.

Havertown’s rich history began with Haverford Township's founding by Welsh Quakers in 1681 on land purchased by William Penn. The town is home to many historic sites, such as the Grange Estate, a mansion that entertained the Revolutionary War figures George Washington and General Lafayette. Nitre Hall, also located within the town’s borders, supplied the United States with over 800,000 pounds of gunpowder during the War of 1812. Other Havertown sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places include the Federal School and Lawrence Cabin.

Havertown is home to over 30 outdoor parks and playing fields. The town also provides other recreation facilities including the Haverford Township Free Library, an outdoor skate park, and the Haverford Township Skatium, a multi-use ice rink for Havertown residents. The town is guarded and watched over by the Haverford Township Police Department and is under the protection of five fire companies: Bon Air, Brookline, Llanerch, Manoa, and Oakmont.

Havertown is served by the School District of Haverford Township, which has one high school, one middle school, and five elementary schools. A newly-refurbished elementary school, Chestnutwold Elementary, re-opened its doors early September 2008. It replaced Oakmont Elementary, which is to become home to the district offices. In 2009, Manoa Elementary School moved from Manoa Road to the intersection of Manoa and Eagle Roads, taking part of the field that had been there for many years. The Haverford High School sports teams are called the "Fords," and have a Model T Ford as mascot.

The recently renovated Haverford Reserve includes a community park for the ultimate recreation experience. Some of the upcoming components that will be added to the new Proposed Community Recreation & Environmental Center at Haverford Reserve include a double gymnasium, walking track, multi purpose rooms, environmental nature area, and a health and wellness area.

The namesake of Haverford and Havertown is Haverfordwest, Wales, UK.-- The name of Haverfordwest  means "ford used by fat cows" from Old English hæfar=heifer, fat cows. In local dialect, it is pronounced "harford". The Welsh language name is said by B.G. Charles to be "merely a corruption of the English name", and as such has no meaning in Welsh. Another claim is that Tudor period monarchs called it "Hereford or Hertford in the West", to distinguish it from either the English Hereford in Herefordshire or Hertford in Hertfordshire. The veracity of these competing explanations of the name origin continue to be a matter of debate amongst scholars and linguistic experts.

Philadelphia is the largest city of Pennsylvania and it is also the commercial, cultural, and educational center of the Delaware Valley. It is home to an ever-growing population of over 6 million, and is our country's fifth-largest metropolitan area. The Philadelphia metropolitan division consists of five counties in Pennsylvania and has a population of 4,008,994. Popular nicknames are Philly and The City of Brotherly Love.

Philadelphia was founded on October 27, 1682 by William Penn, who planned a city along the Delaware River to serve as a port and place for government. The city grew rapidly, and by the 1750’s Philadelphia was the largest city and busiest port in the original 13 American colonies.  During the American Revolution, Philadelphia played an instrumental role as a meeting place for the Founding Fathers of the United States, who signed the nation's Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 and the Constitution on September 17, 1787. Philadelphia also served as our nation’s capitol during the Revolutionary war and was the temporary Capitol, while Washington DC was under construction, from 1790-1800.

Philadelphia has transitioned from being a manufacturing powerhouse to an information and service-based economy. Financial activities account for the largest sector of the metro economy, and it is one of the largest health education and research centers in the United States. Philadelphia's history attracts many tourists, with the Liberty Bell, Rosa Park’s home, and history abound. The Delaware Valley contains the headquarters of thirteen Fortune 500 corporations, five of which are in Philadelphia proper., Philadelphia ranks ninth among world cities and fourth in the nation. The city is also the nation's fourth-largest consumer media market.

Philadelphia is known for its arts and culture. The cheesesteak and soft pretzel are emblematic of Philadelphian cuisine, which is heavily influenced by the city's growing diversity and immigrant population. Philadelphia has many hidden culinary gems not as often publicized.  Including these are the amazing restaurants of Stephen Starr, the renaissance of Northern Liberties’ Piazza at Schmidts, and many high-end restaurants flanking the Kimmel Center which is host to the world famous Philadelphia Orchestra, among others.

The city has more outdoor sculptures and murals than any other American city and Philadelphia's Fairmount Park is the largest landscaped urban park in the world.  Gentrification of Philadelphia's neighborhoods continues into the 21st century and the city has undergone a reversal of its decades-long population loss.

Before Europeans arrived, the Philadelphia area was home to the Lenape (Delaware) Indians in the village of Shackamaxon.  In 1681, in partial repayment of a debt, Charles II of England granted William Penn a charter for what would become the Pennsylvania colony. Despite the royal charter, Penn bought the land from the local Lenape to be on good terms with the Native Americans and ensure peace for his colony.  According to legend Penn made a treaty of friendship with Lenape chief Tammany under an elm tree at Shackamaxon, in what is now the city's Fishtown section.   Penn named the city Philadelphia, which is Greek for brotherly love (from philos, "love" or "friendship", and adelphos, "brother"). As a Quaker, Penn had experienced religious persecution and wanted his colony to be a place where anyone could worship freely. This tolerance, far more than afforded by most other colonies, led to healthier relationships with the local Native tribes and fostered Philadelphia's rapid growth into America's most important city. Penn planned a city on the Delaware River to serve as a port and place for government. Hoping that Philadelphia would become more like an English rural town instead of a city, Penn laid out roads on a grid plan to keep houses and businesses spread far apart, allowing them to be surrounded by gardens and orchards. The city's inhabitants did not follow Penn's plans and crowded by the Delaware River and subdivided and resold their lots. Before Penn left Philadelphia for the last time, he issued the Charter of 1701 establishing Philadelphia as a city. The city soon established itself as an important trading center, poor at first, but with tolerable living conditions by the 1750s. Benjamin Franklin, a leading citizen of the time, helped improve city services and founded new ones, such as one of the American Colonies' first hospitals.

Philadelphia's importance and central location in the colonies made it a natural center for America's revolutionaries. The city hosted the First Continental Congress before the war; the Second Continental Congress, which signed the United States Declaration of Independence, during the war; and the Constitutional Convention after the war.

The city contains many art museums, such as the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Rodin Museum, which holds the largest collection of work by Auguste Rodin outside of France. The city's major art museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, is one of the largest art museums in the United States. Its long flight of steps to the main entrance became famous after the film Rocky.

The city is home to one of the country's oldest artists' clubs. It has a profusion of art galleries, many of which participate in the First Friday event. The first Friday of every month, galleries in Old City, spreading to many nearby neighborhoods, are open much later than normal hours. Annual events include film festivals and parades, the most famous being the New Year's Day Mummers Parade.

Philadelphia has more public art than any other American city, and has more murals than any other U.S. city, thanks in part to the 1984 creation of the Department of Recreation's Mural Arts Program, which seeks to beautify neighborhoods and provide an outlet for artists. The program has funded more than 2,800 murals by professional, staff, and volunteer artists, and educated more than 20,000 youth in Philadelphia.

Philadelphia has a long history of being a haven to immigrants.  This tradition of being a mixing bowl city has continued with the rich diversity each culture contributes to the: cuisine, styles, art, and business of Philadelphia.  Visitors to Philly are always overwhelmed with how approachable and friendly locals are,  and how willing to we are to share in our knowledge of our great city.
