How Mobile Locksmith
Service Works
If you’ve never called a mobile locksmith before, the process probably feels like a black box. You call a number, someone shows up, something happens, and your lock is open. But knowing exactly what to expect — step by step — makes the experience smoother and helps you make better decisions in a stressful moment.
Here’s the complete walkthrough of how Phila Locksmith mobile service works, from the first phone call to the job finished at your location. No shop. No tow. We come to you.
Step 1 — The Call
You call (215) 554-6109. A real person answers — not a call center, not an automated system. We’re going to ask you a few questions to figure out exactly what you need and what it will cost.
For a car situation, have ready:
- Your exact location — address or cross streets. The closer to accurate, the faster we find you.
- Vehicle year, make, and model — this determines what equipment we need and affects the price
- Whether you have any working keys, or need a complete replacement
- Your VIN if you have it accessible — speeds up key programming
For a home lockout:
- Your address
- Any ID or proof of residence — we’ll ask you to have it ready for when we arrive
- Whether there’s any damage to the lock or door already
Step 2 — The Estimate
Before we dispatch anyone, we give you a price. Not a range so vague it’s useless — a specific number for your specific job. This is non-negotiable at Phila Locksmith. We don’t send someone out and then tell you the price after they’ve done the work.
If the job turns out to be more complex than described — a broken key fragment in the cylinder that you didn’t mention, a lock that needs replacement because it’s damaged — we’ll tell you before we do any additional work and give you an updated price first. You decide whether to proceed.
Any locksmith who won’t give you a price over the phone, or quotes $35 and then demands $300 after the job is done, is running a bait-and-switch. Get the price confirmed before work starts. A legitimate locksmith — like Phila Locksmith — will give you a number upfront and stick to it.
Step 3 — Dispatch and Arrival
Once you agree to the quote, we dispatch. We give you an honest ETA based on our current location and Philadelphia traffic — typically 20–45 minutes depending on where you are and what time of day it is. We don’t say “15 minutes” to stop you from calling anyone else and then take 90 minutes. If we’re running later than expected, we call you.
Our van is loaded for the job before we leave. Key cutting machine, programming equipment for your specific vehicle type, picks, opening tools, and hardware stock. We’re not improvising when we get there.
Step 4 — Verifying Your Locksmith
When we arrive, here’s what you should do:
- Ask for the technician’s name and confirm it matches who you were told was coming
- Ask to see a photo ID
- Ask for our PA license number if you want to verify it — it’s #806567
- Confirm the price one more time before work begins: “Just to confirm, we’re at $X for this job, right?”
A legitimate locksmith will pass every one of these checks without hesitation. Anyone who gets defensive about a basic ID request is a problem. We encourage our customers to verify us — it takes 30 seconds and eliminates all doubt.
Mobile Locksmith — We Come to You
No tow. No shop. On-site service anywhere in Philadelphia and surrounding areas.Step 5 — What Happens On-Site
The actual job varies by what you need, but here’s what the process looks like for the most common situations:
Car Lockout
We use long-reach tools and an air wedge to create a small gap in the door frame without damage. The long-reach tool then manipulates the interior lock button or handle. For most vehicles, this takes 2–10 minutes and leaves zero marks on the vehicle.
Car Key Programming
We cut the new key blade on our portable key cutting machine, then connect our programming equipment to your car’s OBD port (the same port a mechanic’s diagnostic tool uses). The programming process varies from 5 minutes on some vehicles to 30+ minutes on others. We verify the key starts the vehicle before we pack up.
For key programming, we will ask for ownership verification — driver’s license, registration, or title. This is a legal requirement and protects everyone. Have it ready.
Home or Business Lockout
We assess the lock and door type first. Most standard residential and commercial locks can be opened non-destructively using pick tools or specialized opening techniques. We choose the method that causes the least wear on the lock mechanism. If we determine destructive entry is necessary — a seized lock with no other option — we’ll tell you first and let you decide.
Rekey Service
We disassemble the lock cylinder at your door, remove the existing pin stack, install new pins sized to the new key, reassemble, and verify the new key works and the old one doesn’t. For a whole house, we take one lock at a time so you’re never without any working lock during the process.
