Ford Models We Service

Ford’s PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) has gone through five generations since 1996 — and each generation needs different tools to program. We carry equipment for every Ford PATS generation plus Ford Intelligent Access smart keys. Here’s what you need to know about the models we see most often across Philadelphia.

F-150
Escape
Explorer
Mustang
Edge
Bronco
Ranger
Expedition

Ford F-150

The F-150 is America’s best-selling truck — and one of the most common vehicle key jobs we handle in the Philadelphia metro. Pre-2004 F-150s use Ford’s PATS 1 (Texas 4C chip) or PATS 2 (40-bit 4D) systems. The 11th-generation F-150 (2004–2014) stepped up to the 80-bit 4D63 transponder — harder to clone, requires OBD programming. The 12th-gen F-150 (2015–2020) uses the 128-bit Super Chip PATS — you need two working keys in the system or dealer-level hardware to add a new one; we have that hardware. 2021+ F-150s with Intelligent Access use a proximity fob. All-keys-lost on a newer F-150 requires a full PATS reset, which we can perform on-site.

Ford Escape & Edge

The Escape is one of the most popular crossovers in the Philadelphia region. Early Escapes (2001–2007) used PATS 2 with a Texas 4D chip. The second-gen Escape (2008–2012) moved to the 80-bit 4D63 system. Third-gen (2013+) Escapes use Ford Intelligent Access with a proximity push-to-start fob on most trims. The Edge (2007–present) follows the same PATS progression as the Escape for its generation. One common Escape issue we see: the fob works for remote start but not for push-button ignition — usually a desynced proximity key that needs reprogramming, not replacement. We fix this on-site in about 20 minutes.

Ford Explorer

The Explorer has been in Ford’s lineup since 1991 and has cycled through multiple key systems. Third and fourth-gen Explorers (2002–2010) use the 80-bit 4D63 PATS system. The fifth-gen Explorer (2011–2019) introduced Intelligent Access push-to-start on most trims. The sixth-gen Explorer (2020–present) is standard with a smart key fob across the lineup. Explorer all-keys-lost is one of the more common calls we get — family vehicle, keys get lost on vacation, car’s in the driveway in northeast Philly. We come to the car, handle the PATS reset or smart key programming, and you’re back on the road without a tow.

Ford Mustang

Mustang owners tend to be hands-on people — and they’re often surprised to learn that a newer Mustang key isn’t something you can just cut at a hardware store. S197 Mustangs (2005–2014) use the 80-bit PATS 4D63 chip. S550 Mustangs (2015–2022) stepped up to 128-bit PATS — you need the car’s PATS codes or two working keys to program a third. The S650 Mustang (2024+) uses Ford Intelligent Access. If you have a Shelby GT350, GT500, or Mach 1, the key system is the same as the base S550 but losing your only key to a rare car is more stressful — we treat these jobs with extra care and verify the vehicle before we start cutting.

Ford Bronco & Ranger

The Bronco returned in 2021 after a 25-year absence and launched with Ford Intelligent Access (smart key / push-to-start) standard across all trims — including the Bronco Sport. Bronco keys are proximity fobs programmed via OBD. The 2019+ Ranger Lariat and above also uses Intelligent Access; the XL and XLT trims used a standard 128-bit PATS transponder key at launch. We carry Bronco and Ranger fob blanks in the van. If you bought a used Bronco and only got one key, adding a second key on-site is smart — losing the only key on a Bronco with Intelligent Access is a more involved and more expensive situation than having a spare.

Ford Expedition & Lincoln Navigator

The Expedition is Ford’s full-size SUV, sharing a platform with the F-150 — and sharing the same key system by generation. Early Expeditions (1996–2003) used PATS 1/2. The 2004–2017 Expeditions used 80-bit PATS. The 2018+ redesigned Expedition uses 128-bit PATS and Intelligent Access. The Lincoln Navigator uses identical key hardware to the Expedition of the same generation. We service both. One note on Expeditions: the PATS antenna ring on the ignition can fail on high-mileage trucks — if your Expedition cranks but won’t start and the security light is flashing, call us before you assume you need a new key. It might be the antenna, not the key.

What Key Does Your Ford Use?

Ford has used five different key technologies since the late ’80s. The year and model determine exactly what tools and time are needed — and what it’ll cost.

Years Key Type How It Works Common Models Time Frame
1988–1995 Standard Cut Key No chip. Basic mechanical key. All pre-PATS Ford models 15–30 min
1996–2001 Ford PATS 1 Transponder Texas 4C chip — Ford’s first passive anti-theft system. Requires 2 programmed keys to add a 3rd. Mustang, Thunderbird, F-150, Expedition, Explorer, Taurus, Continental 15–30 min
2000–2003 PATS 2 Transponder (40-bit 4D) Texas 4D chip with 40-bit encryption — improved security over PATS 1. F-150, Explorer, Focus (2000–2005), Mustang, Expedition, Escape 15–30 min
2004–2014 PATS Transponder (80-bit 4D63) 80-bit encryption — significantly harder to clone. Backward compatible with 40-bit systems. F-150, Explorer, Escape, Edge, Focus, Fusion, Mustang, Expedition 15–30 min
2013–2024 PATS 128-Bit Transponder Super Chip 128-bit — requires 2 working keys or dealer-level equipment to program a new one. F-150, Mustang, Fusion, Edge, Explorer, Ranger, Transit, Bronco, Maverick, EcoSport 15–30 min
2013–Present Ford Intelligent Access (Smart Key) Push-to-start proximity fob — car detects the key automatically, no insert needed. F-150, Explorer, Edge, Fusion, Escape, Mustang, Bronco, Maverick, Ranger 15–30 min

Lost Every Ford Key? We Handle It On-Site.
